The chronic inflammatory periapical lesion is the most common pathology found in relation to alveolar bone of the jaw. From the histological point of view, it can be classified as chronic periapical periodontitis (periapical granuloma), radicular cyst, and as scar tissue. A periapical abscess is a localized, purulent form of periapical periodontitis. The abscess can track through the bone to the soft tissue creating a localized fluctuant swelling, normally adjacent to the affected tooth root.

It is a dental abscess that can occur immediately following root canal treatment. Another cause is due to untreated necrotic pulp (chronic apical periodontitis). Endodontic treatment failure is usually characterised by the presence of post- treatment apical periodontitis, which may be persistent, emergent or recurrent. endodontic infection (fig.

Periapical periodontitis develops most often as a complication of untreated caries, pulpitis, dental trauma or drug impairment. It is an inflammatory disease in which the bacteria from the oral cavity pass through the root canals into the periodontium (the tissue surrounding the tooth root) and there they cause inflammation which affects the bone surrounding the root apex.

[Article in German] Brose D, Schilder R. PMID: 6956177 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] Acute periapical periodontitis This is characterized by an acute inflammatory exudate in the periodontal ligament within the confined space between the root apex and the alveolar bone. Pain is elicited when external pressure is applied to the tooth because the pressure is transmitted through the fluid exudate to the sensory nerve endings. Periapical periodonitis. 1. Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease in the periapical tissues.

Objective: To examine the periradicular status of crowned teeth in an adult population in Scotland. Design: Examination of full-mouth periapical radiographs from 319 consecutive adult patients (7596 teeth) attending Glasgow and Dundee Dental Hospitals for clinical examination. Methods: The periradicular status of teeth with a crown Apical periodontitis includes dental abscess, granuloma and radicular cyst as manifestations of the same basic disease. Acute pulpal and periapical inflammation were the among the first targets of the dental profession. Some forms of apical periodontitis have been associated with particular species dominating in the pulp canal flora.
