The work includes a three-minute black-and-white silent film, still photographs and a post card all related to him crying for an unknown reason. 2016-07-27 Bas Jan Ader disappeared at sea in 1975 while attempting to sail from the east coast of the United States to Europe as part of a project titled In Search of the Miraculous.. The circumstances of his disappearance have led many interpreters to identify Ader with the role of the tragic romantic hero. In a forthcoming catalogue essay, Philipp Kaiser, curator of “Disappearing—California, c. 1970: Bas Jan Ader, Chris Burden, Jack Goldstein,” opening at the Modern Art Museum Fort Worth on May 10th, explicitly connects Ader’s “decided interest in loss of control and self-determination” with the death of his father, an early trauma that inspired Ader’s fixation on “falling, and Bas Jan Ader was very aware and influenced by the circumstances of his father's tragic death when he unconsciously recreated it in his 1971 masterpiece. However, what happened later on could not be forseen; the event of his own disappearance when he set sail across the Atlantic ocean to film the scenes for his In Search of the Miraculous trilogy.
